Ingredients

Scale

Dough:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 ½ cups warm water (about 110°F / 43°C)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • ¼ cup olive oil

Garlic Butter:

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted)
  • 6 cloves garlic (minced)
  • ¼ cup fresh parsley (chopped)
  • ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Grated Parmesan cheese (for topping, optional)

Instructions

  1. Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Allow it to sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.
  3. Combine Mixtures: Gradually add the yeast mixture and olive oil to the dry ingredients. Stir until a sticky dough forms.
  4. Knead the Dough: Place the dough on a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. First Rise: Form the dough into a ball and place it in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover with a clean towel or plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  6. Shape Knots: Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope and tie it into a knot. Tuck the ends underneath for a neat appearance.
  7. Second Rise: Place the knots on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover and let them rise for an additional 30 minutes.
  8. Prepare Garlic Butter: While the knots rise, combine melted butter, minced garlic, parsley, Italian seasoning, and red pepper flakes in a bowl.
  9. Bake: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the knots for about 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
  10. Coat with Garlic Butter: Once out of the oven, brush the knots generously with the garlic butter mixture. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese if desired.

Notes

  • For a more intense garlic flavor, increase the amount of garlic in the butter mixture.
  • You can customize the seasoning by adding herbs like oregano or basil.
  • These garlic knots are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for a day or two.
