Banana Sushi is a fun and creative twist on traditional sushi, featuring a ripe banana wrapped in a flour tortilla and layered with peanut butter, cream cheese, or Nutella, then topped with crunchy or fruity toppings. This easy, no-cook snack is perfect for kids and adults alike, combining sweet and savory flavors with a delightful texture contrast.

Ingredients

Scale

Peanut Butter Banana Sushi

  • 1 taco-size flour tortilla (gluten-free tortilla optional)
  • 1 ripe but firm banana (peeled)
  • 3 tablespoons peanut butter (divided)
  • ½ cup chopped peanuts

Cream Cheese & Strawberry Banana Sushi

  • 1 taco-size flour tortilla (gluten-free tortilla optional)
  • 1 ripe but firm banana (peeled)
  • 3 tablespoons softened cream cheese (divided)
  • 2 strawberries (thinly sliced)
  • 2 tablespoons crushed freeze-dried strawberries

Nutella & Coconut Banana Sushi

  • 1 taco-size flour tortilla (gluten-free tortilla optional)
  • 1 ripe but firm banana (peeled)
  • 3 tablespoons Nutella (divided)
  • 2 tablespoons shredded coconut

Instructions

  1. Prepare the base: Lay one of the tortillas flat on a clean cutting board. Spread 2 tablespoons of your chosen spread—peanut butter, cream cheese, or Nutella— evenly over the top surface of the tortilla to create a smooth layer.
  2. Place the banana: Position the peeled banana at one edge of the tortilla. If the banana has a curve, gently straighten it to help roll evenly; slight cracking is okay and won’t affect the flavor.
  3. Roll the banana: Carefully and snugly roll the banana in the tortilla like wrapping it up in a rug. Make sure the roll is tight and secure. Then place the rolled tortilla seam-side-down on the cutting board to keep it closed.
  4. Add finishing touch: Using the remaining tablespoon of peanut butter, cream cheese, or Nutella, spread it evenly over the top of the roll. Then sprinkle the top with the complementary toppings— chopped peanuts for peanut butter roll, crushed freeze-dried strawberries for cream cheese roll, or shredded coconut for Nutella roll.
  5. Slice into sushi pieces: Using a sharp knife, slice the roll into 1-inch thick pieces resembling sushi rolls. Arrange on a plate and serve with chopsticks for a playful presentation.

Notes

  • For a gluten-free option, use gluten-free flour tortillas.
  • Choose firm bananas to prevent mushiness and make rolling easier.
  • These banana sushi rolls are best served immediately for freshness and texture.
  • Feel free to experiment with different nut butters or spreads.
  • To make it vegan, ensure vegan cream cheese or nut butters are used, and select vegan tortillas.
