Cheese and Filling
- 14 Mini Babybel® cheeses (wax removed)
- 1/3 cup honey or your favorite jam
Dough and Assembly
- 2 sheets thawed puff pastry
- 28 candy eyes or mini chocolate chips
Egg Wash
- 1 egg beaten with 1 teaspoon water
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (204°C) to ensure it’s hot and ready for baking the cheese mummies.
- Prepare Puff Pastry: Lightly dust your counter with flour and roll the thawed puff pastry sheets into rough 11-inch squares. Cut each sheet into 9 smaller squares using a pastry cutter or sharp knife, reserving 4 squares for cutting into pastry strips later.
- Add Cheese and Honey: Drizzle each Mini Babybel cheese with honey or your favorite jam, placing the cheese honey side down onto the puff pastry squares. Cut the pastry around the cheese edges to create a circular shape.
- Wrap Cheese: Fold the puff pastry over each cheese to form a neat package, gently pressing the edges to seal. Place these wrapped cheeses seam-side down on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Create Bandages: From the reserved 4 puff pastry squares, cut about 12 thin strips to resemble mummy bandages. Wrap these strips around the cheese packages, stretching and trimming as needed for a wrapped effect.
- Apply Egg Wash: Brush each mummy all over with the egg wash to help them brown beautifully in the oven.
- Bake: Bake the cheese mummies in the preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes, until the puff pastry is golden brown and cheese inside has melted.
- Decorate and Serve: Once baked, press candy eyes or mini chocolate chips onto each mummy to give them a spooky face. Serve warm and enjoy!
Notes
- Ensure the puff pastry is well thawed before rolling for easier handling.
- You can substitute the honey with any jam of your choice to add different flavors.
- Use gluten-free puff pastry if a gluten-free version is needed.
- For a vegetarian version, confirm the cheese contains vegetarian rennet.
- Serve these cheese mummies warm so the cheese stays gooey and delicious.
